Summertime 2022 in New York City. Temperatures were hot, muggy and as humid as could be. Time to pack my camera gear and head up the eastern seaboard coast and cool of on the shores of the beautiful coast of Maine.
That was going to be easier said than done. I had no plan and no hotel reservations. Any beach town in the summer months has their vacancy at zero as summer travelers always book well in advance. So yes, you guessed it, Dean would be sleeping in his car...again. No worries, I've done it before lol.
The drive up the coast through Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island was blissful, windows open and my favorite eighties music playing. I arrived at Old Orchard Beach, Maine at 2:00am. Now the goal was to find a place to park my car. Most beach towns in the United States have very strict overnight parking regulations. Old Orchard Beach was no exception.
Fifteen minutes of driving and looking where to park legally, 30 minutes and the frustration builds a bit. Finally an overnight metered parking lot, perfect. Well maybe not so perfect as it will now take me 30 minutes to walk to the beach, carrying 30 pounds of camera equipment.
I finally get set up on the beach at 3:30am. That was fine because the early morning sunrise watchers will not be out for another hour. Conditions were perfect for some nighttime, reflection photography of the pier and surrounding area. Or so I thought. The tide was high and the water was rough which pretty much eliminates any chances of a nice crisp reflection of the pier in the water.
I decided to wait it out a while. I could have checked the tide tables but that seemed to planned for my type of photography.
By 4:30am, just before the first peeks of daylight making an appearance, the tides settled down enough to get some pristine shots.
By 5:00am the beach was crowded with sunrise seekers and the tides had increased to 3 foot wave heights.
I love it when I have no plan and just go with the flow and everything falls into place for the perfect photograph. Of course it doesn't always go as well as this morning did (Lol, read some of my other stories from my other photos)
